Creating Love and Memories with the Barbie Doll
In the early 1950's, Barbie Doll inventor Ruth Handler noticed that her
daughter Barbara often enjoyed playing with older dolls than her baby dolls.
Ruth felt that her daughter needed a more mature that the baby dolls that
she was playing with. At the time, however, no such doll existed. It was
the lack of dolls for older girls that sparked the idea for the invention of
the Barbie Doll.
Since the first days of the Barbie doll, Barbie has become a main staple in
toys for young girls all around the world. Ruth saw that there were
difficulties with toy manufacturers wanting to create a life like doll.
Many saw the invention as something that would never take off. Faced with
negative feed back, Ruth did not give up. She was actually inspired to try
even harder.
A few years after her initial try to sell her Barbie doll idea, she
eventually found the toy company Mattell, who took her Barbie doll idea and
brought it to life. In 1959, the very first Barbie doll was sold for a mere
$3.00. At that time, it was a good deal for such a popular product. Little
did Ruth or Mattell know how popular Barbie would become.
Since it's first debut at the American Toy Far in New York City in 1959,
Mattell has sold billions of Barbie dolls all over the world. Many
collectors appreciate the Barbie doll, as there are now many fashions and
accessories that come with the Barbie doll. From the original Barbie doll,
to the current day Holiday Barbie Doll, there is a wide array of Barbie
dolls that can be collected.
Barbie has truly been a staple toy in so many homes. It has created memories
that have been passed down from grandmother to granddaughter, and mother to
daughter. Barbie has created a special bond for many girls, and collectors
alike. The love for Barbie has been strong for many years, and is bound to
remain strong for many years to come.
