Suck It Up with Vintage Vacuum Cleaners
In almost every household, there is a vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner,
known for its ability to suck dirt off of the indoor floors of a home, has
become a life saver to many people. Not only does it clean the floors, but
the vacuum cleaner also prolongs the life of many carpets by keeping them
clean.
The history of the vacuum cleaner is quite interesting. There is
speculation as to when the first vacuum cleaner was patented. Some people
say that it was as early as 1869 that the vacuum cleaner was created.
Others say that it was not created until 1901. Either way, one thing is for
certain. The inventor of the vacuum cleaner was Daniel Hess. It is known
that Daniel Hess called the vacuum cleaner a vacuum "sweeper". The name
that he gave to his creation derived from the fact that his vacuum cleaner
was indeed much like other floor sweepers that were available at that time.
The only difference was that Hess created a suction feature on his vacuum
cleaner. His vacuum cleaner also had two water containers that collected
the dust and dirt, keeping it from circulating back into the air.
Just as the times change, so has the vacuum cleaner. Other
inventors made attempts at the vacuum cleaner. Some were successful, such as
Cecil Booth, whose vacuum cleaner contraption was credited for cleaning the
dirt in English barracks, thus ending the plague. Booth's vacuum cleaner
became a quick success, as people purchased his vacuum in hopes that it
would kill, or get rid of contagious germs. Although there are many
different forms of vacuum cleaners available today, from hand held, to
upright, the main creation for the vintage vacuum cleaner leads back to
Daniel Hess. Without his creation, there would not be the diverse array of
vintage vacuum cleaners that are available today.
